Choosing Between Clipboard History and Cross-Device Copying

Published · 1 min read

This guide helps you decide between clipboard history on one PC and cross-device copying, detailing how to inspect, pin, and clear entries, and distinguishing local history from account-connected features.

Choosing an Approach

Decide between clipboard history on one PC and cross-device copying based on your needs. Clipboard history stores copied content locally, while cross-device copying syncs content across multiple devices. Consider if you need quick access to recent clipboard entries or if you want to share content across devices.

Practical Steps

To use clipboard history, enable it in Settings > System > Clipboard. For cross-device copying, ensure your devices are signed in with the same Microsoft account. Inspect your clipboard history by pressing Win + V, and clear entries by selecting Clear all or individual items.

Illustrative Example

Imagine you have two Windows 10 PCs and a tablet. Enable clipboard history on one PC and cross-device copying on the others. Copy text on one PC, and it appears in the clipboard history on the other devices.

Checking the Result

To check clipboard history, press Win + V. For cross-device copying, copy text on one device and paste it on another to see if it appears. Pin important entries by selecting See more (...) and then Delete. Clear the history by selecting Clear in Settings > System > Clipboard.

Limits and Common Mistakes

Clipboard history is limited to 25 entries and cannot be turned off. Cross-device copying requires the same Microsoft account on all devices. Common mistakes include forgetting to enable clipboard history or cross-device copying, and not clearing the history regularly.
